MIRA Monday: Three Paths…Same Great Destination

We on the Mira team love to gush about all of our books, but we’re especially excited about three upcoming “debuts” (they’re new to us, at least!) with very different backgrounds. So as we eagerly await their arrival at our local bookstores, we thought we’d take a quick look at the origins of these great summer reads.
The “Traditional” Path
Set on the home front during World War II, I’LL BE SEEING YOU, by Suzanne Hayes & Loretta Nyhan, is a love letter to the power of female friendship and the strength and solidarity of women. The authors met online through their blogs and began writing a novel together. It’s hard to say what’s “traditional” in an industry that’s growing and changing daily, but Suzanne and Loretta took it in stride—they wrote a book and signed with their agents, who then pitched to Mira, and we fell in love (much easier said than done, of course!).
Publishing with a Platform
Before she was the author of THE SASSY BELLES, Beth Albright exercised her gift for charm and romance as an actress on DAYS OF OUR LIVES. So when she set out to publish THE SASSY BELLES—a character driven slice of life story, bathed in humor and rich texture of the deep South—she already had a platform to launch from. And that works, too!
The Digital Route

Dave: Julie, I noticed you snuck in #5. That wasn’t perhaps because of an incident that happened to me was it?
Julie: <all innocence> Dave, I’m hurt. I’d never suggest such a thing. But maybe you should talk to your writers.
Dave: So how’d that work for you? Getting shot on the red carpet? I mean… that had to suck.
Julie: <nodding her head> It did kind of suck. Yes. I don’t recommend it. Have you ever been shot, Dave?
Dave: I have not. It’s not on my bucket list.
Julie: Good call. Very sensible.
Dave: <deadpan to the camera> Ya think? <back to Julie> So you have a new man in your life. What can you tell us about him?
Julie: I like him a lot. He’s a good guy. <she leans in to Dave who leans close to her> He likes his privacy.
Dave: Ah, so he’s got no aspirations to date a Kardashian if things don’t pan out with you?
Julie: <laughing> I don’t believe so, no. Besides, aren’t all the Kardashian’s spoken for at the moment?
Dave: <laughing> Maybe. It’s so hard to keep track of them. I know you have to catch a plane and we have to go to commercial, but thanks for stopping in. You are as beautiful as ever. <he kisses her hand>

In five words, describe the Sullivan family.
Fun. Emotional. Sexy. Warm. Loving.
What should readers who have read and enjoyed your Sullivan books look forward to in the long-awaited print editions?
I had a great time adding new content to the stories. After having spent the past two years with my Sullivans, I know the characters so well that it was really fun to go back through the books and flesh out various scenes a little bit more. In some cases, I wrote entire new scenes. I can’t wait for everyone to read the books in print!
With your musical past and being a huge music lover, how does music influence your writing?
Music has always been a huge part of my life, and now that I’m writing romance for a living rather than touring and playing my songs, music is still a massive influence on my work because I’m very inspired by the emotion behind melody and lyric as I write every day. For each book I write, I find a handful of songs that really speak to me and I play them over and over. The songs become a cue for me to be able to sink back into the book no matter where I am or what I’ve been doing. Pop music tends to be the most powerful for me, because they are five minute love stories that aim straight at the heart of what love is all about.
You’ve mentioned previously your Sullivan books are named after song titles. How do you pair your books with the right song?
I have a huge list of potential song titles that I’m constantly adding to, and for each book the title has to fit exactly right with the story.
In THE LOOK OF LOVE, no one has ever looked at Chloe the way Chase does, right from the start.
In FROM THIS MOMENT ON, Marcus and Nicola eventually realize that they each found their destiny in that very first moment that they met each other.
And in CAN’T HELP FALLING IN LOVE, Gabe and Megan think they each have a good reason to guard their hearts, but they can’t help falling for each other.
In addition to the titles working for each story, all of the titles have to fit together as a group for a cohesive feel to the series.
