Bend the shaft slightly in your hands or look for the flex rating on the shaft to determine the flexibility of the golf club.

• Test the comfort of the fairway wood by adopting a proper swinging stance away from the ball. Grip the club so that your thumbs overlap and bend your knees slightly while bending forward until the clubhead rests on the ground with your arms straight. Slowly glide the club back and over your shoulder, allowing the heel of your front foot to pivot and rise from the ground slightly if needed. Bring the club down and allow the clubhead to pass through as if it were hitting the ball, noticing how even the clubhead is with the ground during your downswing.

• Consult a distance meter or map of the golf course to determine how many yards you need the ball to travel. Select your 3-wood for distances of 180 to 235 yards or a 5-wood for distances of 170 to 210 yards. Avoid selecting a fairway wood if you are closer than 200 yards from the tee to reduce the risk of overshooting and placing your ball in a sand trap or bunker outside of the green.
