  How to Select a Fairway Wood

• Fairway woods are a class of golf club designed to deliver greater overall distance than iron clubs. A 3-wood can be an effective club for furthering the ball down the fairway after teeing and can sometimes be a better choice than drivers for players with faster swings. While modern technology has convinced some golfers to trade in their fairway woods for the newer, more versatile hybrid clubs, others still prefer a fairway wood for shots requiring gains of 170 yards or more.

• Select a 3, 4 or 5 wood whose clubhead offers the most surface area for making contact with the ball. Check the club for any scratches or damages that may affect performance. While originally crafted from woods such as hickory, most modern fairway woods are made with iron, steel and other metal components.

• Match the shaft flexibility of the fairway wood to your golf swing. Go for a stiffer golf shafts to increase precision and accuracy and a softer flex for overall greater distance.
