Understanding the Types of Golf Clubs
Woods:
The most common set of clubs has three woods: 1# wood (Driver), 3# wood (Spoon), 5# wood (Cleek). 3# wood and 5# wood is also called Fairway Wood. The longest and lowest-lofted wood is the driver, or 1# wood. The driver is designed to be hit off the tee for the first shot of long-yardage holes, also designed to be hit from the turf. Fairway woods are designed for shots from off the turf of the fairway that still require long distance, such as the second shot of a par-5 or a long par-4 hole.
Irons:
Irons include numbered irons and wedges. The most common set of clubs has eight irons: 4# to 9# iron, PW (pitching wedge), SW (sand wedge). They are used most frequently throughout the game. They can still achieve fairly large distances, though not quite as far as the woods can. Depending on which particular iron you use, you can have a much higher level of accuracy and get the ball a lot closer to where you want it to be.
The numbered irons can be classified roughly into three groups according to their length. 1#, 2#, 3# iron are long irons and they are heavy and easy to control shot. 4#, 5#, 6# iron are medium irons and they are easy to swing and use. 7#, 8#, 9# iron are short irons and they are designed to shot at short range or in a difficult position. Among them, 7# iron is the most common iron.
Pitching wedges have a variety of uses; they can be used with a full swing of varying strength on the fairway or rough for lay-up or approach shots, an abbreviated "chip shot" on approach to the green or from a bunker, or a "bump and run" putting stroke from the fringe onto the green.
The sand wedge, or sand iron, is primarily designed for use out of sand bunkers. It is generally lofted between 55-56°, and has the widest sole of the wedges which provides the greatest amount of "bounce", allowing the clubhead to glide through sand and avoid digging in.
Putters:
A standard golf bag usually only contains one putter. Putters are used on the putting green at the end of the course, or in other parts of the course that require delicate accuracy. They are meant to be the clubs with the shortest distance and the highest accuracy, usually only going a few yards to the target. Balls hit with putters are not meant to fly up in the air. Rather, they are just pushed lightly along the ground where they will roll gently to the target. Putting is arguably the most important part of the game, so it is a good idea to get a nice putter and practice a bunch with it.
Hybrids:
Hybrids combine the advantages of an iron with the more forgiving nature of a wood. A hybrid generally features a head very similar to a fairway wood; hollow steel or titanium with a shallow, slightly convex face. hybrid with a wood-like clubhead is often used for long shots from difficult rough and for nearly any shot where the golfer would normally use a long iron but feels uncomfortable doing so. They also are direct replacements for fairway woods in most situations, but a fairway wood will have greater club speed and more roll for better distance.
