Supercuts Are The Best Things On YouTube
Thanks to a fortuitous combination of affordable, easy-to-use video editing software, digital media, and obsessive fanboys and girls, a wonderful new cinematic sub-genre is emerging: the supercut. Supercuts are essentially video compilations in which certain key moments in films,TV shows, or other videos, are spliced together in rapid succession. A typical example is this video, that splices together characters from various movies saying "I can explain."

American Automakers Propelling Auto Sales
Buoyed by strong sales from American automakers, the auto industry appears to be continuing its recovery from the financial collapse of 2008. Ford, led by sales of its redesigned-for-2013 Fusion mid-size sedan and Escape compact SUV, was up six percent overall (the Ford division itself was up seven percent). Sales of its popular F-150 pickup were up 16 percent.
Is Email Obsolete?
To anyone who works in an office or who grew up in the pre-internet years, email is an essential tool. It's how we communicate with coworkers, friends, and family members. But to an increasing number of people in the tech world, and to many in the so-called "millennial" generation, email is as old-fashioned and irrelevant as, well, writing and mailing a letter.
Music From Bombino, Rilo Kiley, Mudhoney and more
The weather outside is finally not frightful, and we are all eagerly anticipating Spring weather, not to mention the beginning of music festival season, which will be under way very soon. But until those beautiful Pitchfork and Lolla days are upon us, we'll have to be contented with the usual batch of new releases, presented here for your edification and enjoyment.
The Privacy Paradox
A few weeks ago, Boston Police used Facebook to shut down a DIY punk rock gig by using the rather laughable pseudonym Joe Sly (along with an icon featuring a green mowhawked punk with "Boston Punk Zombie" scrawled above it) to discover the location of the illegal gig.
Bacon Mouthwash Hints at Industry-Wide Prank
There's an ad campaign making the rounds on the internet today, introducing Scope's newest mouthwash flavor: bacon. Scope's Bacon-Flavored Mouthwash has it's own website, its own commercial, its own image on Scope's Facebook page-everything that would be part of an actual product promotion. Of course, today is April 1st, and savvy web surfers know better than to trust anything they read today.
Tesla Announces Its Newest Car: The Model G
In what seemed like a badly-timed prank, only days before April first, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk shocked organizers and attendees at last weekend's EcoCon13 conference when he announced his plan to roll-out the company's first gas-powered car. "We're calling it 'The Model G'," Musk told a packed auditorium moments after he took the stage to deliver an address at the event's kick-off dinner.
Honda Brings In-Car Vacuum to Minivans
In what's sure to be a boon for parents everywhere, Honda is going to offer an in-car vacuum in the top-trim level of its 2014 Odyssey minivan. Called the HondaVAC (perhaps the least creative name ever), the vacuum will be standard on Touring Elite trim Odysseys and will run for up to eight minutes after the engine is shut off.
How to Win Likes And Influence Hashtags
In our modern, fast-paced world we are beset on all sides by mindless distractions. Our families cry out for our love, our friends make demands on our time, and our bosses expect us to work. Even our religious beliefs sometimes take our minds and bodies away from the things in life that really matter. With all of these annoyances it's a wonder any of us have time to update our statuses. The typical American is barely able to freshen their Pinterest page more than six or seven times a day, let alone tweet on an hourly basis.
Mercedes-Benz SLS Electric Supercar to Debut in Europe
Mercedes-Benz is unleashing an electric version of its SLS AMG supercar on Europe. While there are no current plans to sell the car, which will retail for around €416,000 (about $533,104 dollars in today's exchange rates), in the U.S., the all-electric supercar with gullwing doors has been confirmed for production in Europe. The timing may seem odd, since Audi killed production hopes for its R8 E-Tron (which would have been a direct competitor), but Mercedes-Benz is green-lighting the car.
Don't Be An Idiom: Household Word
"Household word" is one of those idioms that has become so common that it could itself be described as a household word. Unlike many idiomatic expressions that have unknown origins, the origin of this idiom is well-documented. Household word, like many other idioms that have themselves become household words, was coined by William Shakespeare. Its first appearance was in Henry V, written in 1598:
App Roundup: Skee-Ball 2, What's the Phrase?
It's that time again for an app roundup. It's finally starting to warm up, just a smidge, so you'd think that things like weight loss apps or beach update apps would be on the charts this week, but alas, it's more of the same. Here's this week's most downloaded apps, as well as a couple of our favorites.
Marriage Equality, Pot Tax, Safety Tips For Ladies
In case you're wondering why a bunch of people on Facebook suddenly have red boxes with two pink lines in them instead of their usual avatar, it's because the issue of marriage equality is before the U.S. Supreme Court and many people are showing their support for same-sex marriages by displaying the red "equal sign" icon. Naturally, many variations on the theme have cropped up. Here are a few of our favorites:
Forty Years Ago: Tom Waits Releases Debut Album
This month marks the 40th anniversary of the release of Tom Waits' debut album, Closing Time. To think of Tom Waits today-the veteran "outsider" musician with the persona that fits somewhere between Walter Brennan and John Cage-it's hard to wrap one's mind around the fact that at the start of his illustrious career he was a simple singer/songwriter, coming from the same southern California scene as James Taylor, Loudon Wainwright, Jackson Brown, and The Eagles.
New York Auto Show Wrap Up
The second and final media preview day of the 2013 New York Auto Show is now over, but it didn't pass by without a few more major reveals. Scion showed off a refreshed version of its front-drive tC coupe, while Volvo followed with refreshed versions of its S60 and XC60, and an announcement sure to please hard-core fans of the brand: the V60 wagon is coming stateside.
Natural Ways to Dye Eggs
With Easter around the corner, you've likely been inundated with requests from your kids to dye eggs. While this is certainly a fun activity, for some people the use of artificial dyes is cringe-worthy. Thankfully, though, there are ways you and your family can join in on the fun without coating the eggs in unnatural chemicals. Here are a few methods for creating similar colors with things you might already have at home-the dyeing process is the same (just let the eggs soak in the colored solution for a few minutes), but the colors come from much more natural sources.
Touch Screen Laptops and the Corporate World
With Windows 8 being the standard OS on non-Apple computers now, it's easy to notice that the newer computers are formatted to work best with touchscreen laptops. However, if you've ever worked in an office, you know that the technology there is generally not the newest available, and is often times painfully old, slow, or outdated. So with the new OS being geared towards newer, more-capable tech, what are corporations and offices going to do to adapt?
Kourtney Klein Sounds Off
Kourtney Klein's drive to leave her hometown of Temecula, California was almost as consuming as her obsession for all things percussion when the music school dropout got on the I-15 Freeway and headed for Hollywood 10 years ago. A self-professed nerd with a penchant for go-go dancing and welding, Klein is one of those rare American entertainers that defy any rational categorization. Among many things, she is the former host of Spike TV's short lived series Boom and the ex-drummer/electronic programmer for the British post-industrial group Nitzer Ebb. We recently talked to Kourtney about her work ethic, her love for '80s synth-pop, and her current musical project, Army on the Dance Floor.
New York Auto Show Dispatch Three
The biggest afternoon development to come out of the 2013 New York Auto Show was the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. When Chevy unveiled the Camaro ZL1 in Chicago a couple years back, almost everyone thought it would get the Z/28 moniker. But Chevy held back, choosing instead to bestow it on this race-track ready 500-plus (Chevy won't release exact figures) horsepower Camaro.
