Does Your Older Child Wet the Bed?
When your child is first making the transition from diapers to big girl/boy pants it is not uncommon for betwetting to occur while their body begins to make the adjustments to sensation for holding the emissions. However, sometimes children of five years and older experience a continuation of bedwetting. There are several reasons why these nocturnal enuresis may occur. The problem may stem from low self-esteem, or an excessive night-time urine production. Fortunately there are several proven methods that may help you to move your child in the right direction in ceasing bedwetting.
Stranger Danger: 3 Things to Tell Your Kids about Strangers
Nearly everywhere your child goes there will be strangers. In the park, at a restaurant, or walking down the street, theyâre sure to encounter people they donât know. Most strangers are harmlessâtheyâre just everyday people living their lives. However, some strangers may not be. Itâs important to talk to your kids about strangers, and how to handle them. Here are three things to cover with your kids:
How Bullying Can Lead to Self Harm
The British Medical Journal (BMJ) recently published a new study citing that children who are bullied in their younger years are 3 times more likely to develop self harm tendencies. One of the best ways to prevent this is to teach your children how to avoid bullying, and you need to be sure your child is not the bully by teaching them respect for others. Bullying consists of everything from demeaning and rude comments to physical altercations. Teach your children that this form of behavior is not acceptable, and be on the lookout for signs that your child, or a child you know is being bullied.
Difficulties in Child Weight Loss
Approximately one-third of American children are overweight or obese, a trend that seems to continue despite the efforts of national organizations or pushes to encourage healthier eating. The first step is to set up healthy eating and exercising in the home, encourage your children to partake of healthier snacks and serve foods that are high on the addition of vegetables while avoiding fried foods, or those containing large quantities of fats. While this first step is probably the most important and difficult, you need to take a look around you at situations where your child may face un-healthy options. For instance, is the post game snack full of sugar? How about the class activity treat?
Wearing Your Bike Helmet Correctly
Hopefully all parents see the benefits and requirements of getting their children bike helmets before allowing them to take to the road on two wheels. This should be applicable for riding on everything from bicycles and tricycles to rollerblades and skateboards. However, getting the helmet is not enough, you need to be sure you child is wearing the helmet correctly. As with shoes and clothes you child will likely grow out of their first bike helmet, this doesn’t mean you should get a bigger helmet to begin with; if the helmet does not fit snuggly on the head, it isn’t being worn properly.
Encourage Kids to Hang Up the Phone
A recent study out of the campuses of University of California found that many of our college-aged children are driving distracted, a habit that can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Other studies have prooven that using cell phones while driving increases the risk of crashes by 400%, and that even hands-free phones are equally dangerous. The risk of crashing while texting increases the rate by 1600%!! All parents need to stand up and encourage their children to hang-up the phone while driving. Your child most likely is not recieving a call or text that is so imporant it can’t wait a few minutes while they safely reach their destination.

Can You Help Your Child’s ADHD With Diet
While many people initially turn to medications to deal with their children who have ADHD, there are many out there who donât find the idea of mood altering medications to be the way they want to deal with the diagnosis. While more research needs to be conducted, early results show that incorporation of certain nutrients, such as fatty acids from fatty fish, may be able to moderate the symptoms, while allowing the child to be medication free. These results are early yet, but it may be that a solution is on the horizon for parents who donât wish to treat pharmaceutically.
Carrying An Asthma Inhaler to School
Fewer than 200 children die every year from asthma-related deaths, and unfortunately, many of these deaths are preventable but school guidelines prevented the child from carrying their necessary inhalers and medications. According to most school policyâs, children are required to keep their inhalers in the school nurses office, rather than on their person. However, in the event of an attack, not only can it be extremely difficult for a child to get to the school office, it is also a waste of precious time for a child who cannot get oxygen into their system. Fortunately, state and federal laws are an aide to ensuring your child can have direct access to their inhaler. By law, schools can provide the necessary paperwork to be filled out by the parents and doctor to allow your child to carry their inhaler or an epinephrine pen.
Encourage Your Teen to Practice Yoga
Most of us will agree that the teenage years are the most emotionally frought of our young lives. With the various hormones constantly making us unstable, in addition to the introduction of physical changes in our bodies, and unfamiliar feelings and urges, the psychology of the teenage years can define the rest of our lives. A recent study conducted in Massachusetts found that yoga helped with the overall mental health of teenagers. The teens who participated were better able to control anger expression, mindfulness and overall resilience opposed to the teens who were not enrolled in the yoga program. Taking up the sport with your child will not only provide you with a bonding experience, but may help you with your stress management as well.
