Wacky Wireless News: Internet Trends 2013

Smartphone users check their devices roughly 150 times a day. Worldwide mobile access accounts for 15% of all Internet traffic. How do we know this? Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers released "Internet Trends 2013," a presentation with information about emerging Internet technologies, mobile trends, the future of mobile advertising, and more. The information, presented by Mary Meeker, a partner at KPCB, back up what we already know – smartphone and tablet use around the world is growing and people are more connected than ever, sharing photos, video, tweets, and texts. Some of the statistics, though, may surprise you.

Here are some of the highlights from that presentation:

1. 100 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute. In 2009 the rate was 20 hours per minute.
2. More than 500 million photos are shared every day worldwide.
3. Mobile is a more popular gateway to the Internet than PCs in some countries, including South Korea and China.
4. At the end of 2012 tablet shipments surpassed PC shipments.
5. There’s a $20 billion opportunity for effective mobile advertising in the U.S. alone (based on how much time we spend using mobile devices vs. amount of mobile ad spending)
6. 80% of the world's most popular Internet sites are American companies.
7. On average worldwide, 24% of people polled said they “shared everything” or “most things” online. The U.S. specifically is at 15%.
8. When asked how social and communication activities on smartphones made people feel, mobile users in the U.S. reported feeling connected, excited, curious, and productive.
9. There are more people using Android and iOS devices in China than in the U.S.
10. There were fewer than a billion smartphone subscribers in 2011, but that grew to 1.5 billion by 2012.
