Medical Romance Fast Track: With One Week to Go…

With June literally around the corner, it can only mean one thing! The Medical Fast Track 2012 is approaching! Romance HQ in London is abuzz with anticipation and excitement!

We hope our handy tips, guidelines, blogs and for those that took part in our lively, engaging and insightful online-editor chat have all been inspired. And for those who are still undecided whether they should enter – then the answer is a resounding yes! We are looking for more new authors, and really want to hear from exciting new voices.  This is your chance to catch an editor’s eye and receive a response by the end of June.  And who knows where that might lead . . .
Remember, in 2010 we read an astonishing 174 submissions and went on to buy five new authors. This year, you can be part of it all! Don’t miss this fabulous opportunity.

And finally, just a re-cap of  how the fast track works:

All you need is an idea for a romance in a medical setting and the first chapter only – the rest is simple!

  • Send us a covering letter with a synopsis of your story and characters (no more than two pages) along with the first chapter
  • Fast-track submissions must be received between 1st and 7th June 2012 (12.00 midnight BST, British Summer Time)
  • Email your submission (as a Word document attachment) to [email protected]
  • You will receive a response by email by 29th June.
  • Otherwise our normal submissions and format procedures apply (visit our ‘Submit  manuscript’ section at www.millsandboon.co.uk )

We hope you’re as excited as we are! This is a fantastic opportunity to get your writing noticed by the Medical Romance team, so GOOD LUCK and we can’t wait to read all your submissions!

Robyn Carr’s Mother’s Day Book Signing at Fort Hood

by Melanie Dulos, Senior Manager, Public Relations

Robyn Carr has always had a special place in her heart for the men and women who serve in the military.  From a military family herself – her husband is a former Air Force pilot and her son is an orthopedic surgeon the U.S. Army – the #1 New York Times Bestselling author often incorporates military themes and characters into her best-selling Virgin River series of books.  Naturally, when Robyn had the opportunity to participate in a book signing at the Fort Hood military base followed by a tour of the Center for the Intrepid (CFI) – a rehabilitation center for wounded warriors -and a book signing at the Warrior and Family Support Center (WFSC), in Texas,  she was more than happy to spend Mother’s Day weekend doing so. The visit to the base, the CFI and the WFSC was a family affair as her husband Jim and her son Brian also joined her.

(From L to R) Jim Carr, Major Brian Carr and Robyn Carr in the green room before the signing at Fort Hood military base in Texas.

Many men and women came out to meet Robyn at the base, the CFI and the WFSC.  To celebrate her visit, staff from the WFSC arranged to have a custom-made cake to welcome her featuring a facsimile of the cover of Robyn’s latest Virgin River series book, SUNRISE POINT.

Robyn posing with her custom-made cake before signing books at the Warrior and Family Support Center in San Antonio, Texas.

During her time at the base and at WFSC, Robyn had time to connect personally with fans of her work and the men and women who have sacrificed to serve for their country.

Robyn takes a break from signing copies of SUNRISE POINT for a photo with one of the soldiers at WFSC while her son, Major Brian Carr looks on.

When asked about the weekend, Robyn had this say:

“I couldn’t have been more impressed or more grateful to have taken part in something like this.  The tour of the Center for the Intrepid was awe-inspiring.  There were hundreds of amputees and burn victims working hard to get their lives back – they’re even surfing, horseback riding and rock climbing!  I was afraid I’d be weeping, but I was laughing and gasping in awe.”

While the weekend may not have been the most traditional way to spend Mother’s Day, one thing is for sure –it is definitely a celebration Robyn will cherish for a long time to come.

What was the most unusual or interesting way you’ve spent your Mother’s Day weekend?

Revealing the Harlequin Cover Photo Contest Winner

Earlier in the year Kobo and Harlequin cooked up a very fun cover contest, with the grand prize being a behind-the-scenes trip to a Harlequin cover shoot! Of course, I was quick to volunteer to escort the lucky winner to the event.

A group of us, including our lovely prizewinner Melanie, arrived at the studio in high spirits. We were welcomed by Robert,  the fabulous photographer, as well as a very handsome and friendly model named Ross. We watched the crew create the set (the bow of a boat) while Creative Director Tony gave us the lowdown on the day ahead, and a bit of an overview of the evolution of the Harlequin cover (we’ve  come a long way, baby!).  We tried not to be distracted while Ross did pushups in the corner.

And then the action began! We watched from the sidelines as they shot about 500 photos of Ross and Jen (his lucky leading lady).  I must mention, there was a wind machine involved as well as a spritzer (one lucky woman had the job of spritzing Ross and dabbing his brow). We tried not to giggle when the director said things like, “she needs to move down on the wood.”

Then it was our turn!  Melanie needed no second invitation before she leapt into Ross’s arms for her own photo shoot. And I can’t say that I was very reluctant either…

It’s a tough job…
