A Weekend Filled with Romance!
by Harlequin Presents editor Carlyn Byrne
This weekend members of the Presents team attended The Festival of Romance. The festival celebrates romantic fiction in all its forms; where authors, publishers and readers gather to share our love of romance.
Nestled among the rolling hills of the English countryside, there wasn’t a tent in sight, as in true Presents style a spa hotel was our base for the weekend. But there was no time for a swim as we embarked on an action-packed weekend of parties, quizzes and workshops – it’s a hard life!
Cover Reveal: Sherryl Woods’ OCEAN BREEZE Series
If you’re in a chilly spot today (like me–I’m in St. John’s, Newfoundland!) we have a warm cover reveal from author Sherryl Woods that may give you that dose of vitamin D that you’re looking for.
What can you expect in this brand new series? Sherryl has departed from her Sweet Magnolia and Chesapeake Shores novels for a time to bring you OCEAN BREEZE. The series follows the three Castle sisters in the Outer Banks Region of North Carolina. Beautiful weather, beautiful beaches, and three new compelling Sherryl Woods stories.
We asked Harlequin Books Art Director Mike Rehder about the books and how he approached designing the covers for them. He worked closely with Sherryl to create the covers.
He says, “We really wanted to make sure that we made a visual departure, but still kept some of the visual language that has denoted her books all along. Both Sherryl and I felt that the bright warm light typically found at the beach had to be part of the overall direction.”
“In all three titles, we continue to have a large clear sky to hold the author’s name and book title (a visual pillar we have always used for her), but we have shifted that sky to a different warm hue for each book.”

Q&A with Carol Marinelli and Excerpt from the Final Santina Crown Book!
Endings to series are always bittersweets, aren’t they? You can’t wait to find out how it will all end, where all the characters will wind up and how they’ll all receive their happily-ever-afters–but you also don’t want to say goodbye to the characters and world you’ve followed.
December marks the conclusion of Harlequin Presents’s

New Harlequin Nocturne Series from Heather Graham, Harley Jane Kozak and Alexandra Sokoloff
by Ann Leslie Tuttle, Senior Editor, Nocturne
When I was in Anaheim this summer for the Romance Writers of America’s annual convention, I was delighted to finally get together for drinks with Heather Graham, Harley Jane Kozak and Alexandra Sokoloff, who have collaborated on The Keepers: L.A. miniseries for Harlequin Nocturne. If it wasn’t already apparent to me from reading their manuscripts, these women have a blast whenever they can get together, much less work together–be it brainstorming a miniseries or performing in the Killer Thriller Band.
The setting for our meeting was also pretty appropriate given that the series is set in L.A. Each of these women have first-hand knowledge of the entertainment business, which made their choice of setting–Hollywood–frightfully plausible. (Aren’t stories about the movie business surreal enough sans the paranormal?)
New York Times bestselling author Heather Graham kicks off the series with her free digital prequel story, THE GATEKEEPER, and book one debuts in January with Heather’s KEEPER OF THE NIGHT. The series focuses on female cousins who have just fallen into their destined roles of Keepers of the peace between the paranormals and the humans. Now these extraordinary women must balance the fate of the paranormal world with their own desires…

The Keepers: L.A. miniseries continues in March with Harley Jane Kozak’s KEEPER OF THE MOON, in May with Alexandra Sokoloff’s KEEPER OF THE SHADOWS and concludes in July with Heather’s KEEPER OF THE DAWN.

Keep Them Young, Hot and Hot for Each Other (+ Contest!)
by Marie Force, author of the Fatal series from Carina Press
Before I wrote FATAL AFFAIR, book 1 in my Fatal series, I attended the RWA National Conference where I had the chance to sit in on a Q&A with Nora Roberts. About halfway through the session, I worked up the nerve to ask her my burning question: I’m thinking about writing a series featuring the same couple in every book, similar to your In Death Series. I’m wondering how you keep Eve and Roarke’s romance fresh over so many books.
She said (and I’m paraphrasing here): It’s simple. You keep them young, hot and hot for each other. The rest works itself out.
As I head into the release of book 5, FATAL DECEPTION on Nov. 12, and the writing of book 6, FATAL MISTAKE, I’ve discovered Nora was right (hardly a shocker—she usually is!) In the Fatal Series, Washington, D.C. Police Lieutenant Sam Holland and her husband, U.S. Senator Nick Cappuano, are young, hot and hot for each other. In fact, their marriage seems to get hotter in every book. There’s a scene in Deception… well, I’ll let you read it and see for yourself!
Keeping Sam and Nick’s romance fresh and vital isn’t the most challenging aspect of writing this series. The part that keeps me working hard and sweating bullets is the murder mysteries. Romance? I got that covered. Murder? I’m not as well-versed in how to kill people as I probably ought be to write these kinds of books. Then again, who among us non-criminal types would be prepared to write that? As a law-abiding citizen who’d never given much thought to the multitude of ways to commit homicide, I find it to be a never-ending challenge to come up with new and different methods to pull off a murder.
My husband read FATAL AFFAIR and was quite undone by the way in which I murdered U.S. Senator John O’Connor. He tells people all the time he isn’t quite sure about sleeping next to a woman who thinks the way I do… In case you haven’t read FATAL AFFAIR, I won’t spoil anything for you, but trust me when I say, it was kind of gnarly (especially if you’re a guy!)
I’m often asked if I know going into a book who the murderer is. The answer to that is a big, fat NO. I like to let Sam’s investigation lead me to the culprit. I believe not knowing keeps me engaged in the story and gives me an experience similar to that of the reader who learns “who done it” at the same time Sam does. I was about halfway through Deception when I asked myself, “Where in the hell are you going with this?” I had no idea! Then one day on the treadmill, the whole thing presented itself to me the way it often does in my twisted mind, and there was my culprit and my ending rolled out before me like a red carpet. I sped home and wrote 10,000 words that day. Those are the days writers live for! The end result is that Deception is my favorite Fatal book yet, and I hope readers will agree. Here’s what you can expect to find in Deception:
The wife of the White House deputy chief of staff has been beaten to death, and their one-year-old daughter is missing. D.C. Police Lieutenant Sam Holland is in charge of the murder investigation, but she’s forced to collaborate with Special Victims Unit detectives as well as thorn-in-her-side FBI Special Agent Avery Hill. Then, a cold case of her father’s resurrects old hurts—a distraction Sam cannot afford.
As Sam’s investigation heats up, so does Nick’s political career—and the heat carries over to their bedroom. Will Sam put the pieces together in time to catch a killer and find the baby, or will ambition, greed and lies prove fatal?
Here are some other questions I’m often asked about the Fatal series:
What is the order of the books:
FATAL AFFAIR (free for the month of November at all e-book retailers), FATAL JUSTICE, FATAL CONSEQUENCES, FATAL DESTINY, FATAL FLAW and FATAL DECEPTION, with FATAL MISTAKE coming in June 2013.
How many books do you plan to write?
Just like with my popular McCarthys of Gansett Island series, I give the same answer to this question for the Fatal Series–as long as readers are enjoying the series and it’s still fun for me, I will continue to write it.
Will Sam ever have a baby?
I’m not sure yet. Like the readers, I’d love to grant her fondest desire, but I have to be realistic that giving her a newborn would change her life—and Nick’s—dramatically enough to impact the pace of the series. So IF there’s a baby, and right now that is a big IF, it would happen much later in the series. I have a number of other plans that will impact Sam and Nick’s family and help to fill the void in the meantime.
Will Nick run for president?
Maybe. Maybe not. Can you see Sam as First Lady? Neither can I, but how fun would it be to force our square peg into that round hole? Very fun indeed! We’ll see where life takes them.
Will Sam and Nick adopt Scotty?
More on this in Deception!
Will we ever find out who shot Skip?
I hope so, but sometimes in life we never know why certain things happened. That could be true here, too. I continue to wait for that information to present itself to Sam—and to me. If it does, we’ll find out. If it doesn’t, we may never know. I think Sam is starting to make peace with the possibility that she may never know. I have some fun plans for Skip’s character in upcoming books. I’m looking forward to writing that! We find out more about the mysterious Fitzgerald case in Deception, and this leads to an unusual rift between father and daughter.
Do you have other questions about the series I haven’t answered here? Feel free to ask away! If I have answers, I’ll be happy to provide them—or I’ll check with Sam to see what she has to say. ![]()
