Inside Scoop on the Annual Harlequin UK Author Party
by Harlequin Presents editor Carly Byrne
It’s that time of year again when the Harlequin UK office is hazy with perfume, the corridor becomes a catwalk and desks become make-up counters as the editors prepare for the annual author party! Here’s the inside scoop on the night that Harlequin editors look forward to all year!
This year’s party was held at the Charing Cross hotel in the heart of London. Marble pillars, ornate ceilings and flowing champagne created a truly Presents-esque feel; though there was a distinct lack of alpha males!
Our authors are such a friendly, fun and passionate group and the party is a chance to celebrate our successes – awards, book milestones or personal triumphs – as you can imagine we all chat ourselves hoarse!
Cover Reveal: Julie Kagawa’s ‘TIL THE WORLD ENDS
Typography, graphic design and, oh yeah, JULIE KAGAWA fans–unite!
I’m pleased to present Julie Kagawa’s ‘TIL THE WORLD ENDS cover.
The cover is designed around three storylines, first of which is written by Julie and the subsequent two by Ann Aguirre and Karen Duvall, into one. All three books center around a natural disaster. Based on what you see on this cover, I’d love to find out in the comments which disasters you think will appear in the series!
The bold typography of the title conveys the urgency and panic in its stark sans-serif font. Even the apostrophe before the world ‘Til is a foreboding little noose! Kudos to Art Director Kathleen Oudit and her design team for this gorgeous cover. She sent us a little something about how the natural disasters were incorporated into the cover design.
“[In the design you will find] a section of an infrared satellite photograph of a melting Alaskan glacier; small glowing particles and primary colors were combined into a semi-abstract pattern representing nature gone rogue. Then, the chaotic texture flows into a branch of blood red vein – representing humanity as both vulnerable prey and triumphant heart.”
The first title in the series, Dawn of Eden by Julie Kagawa, will be released on January 29, 2013 from Luna Books.

But for Mari Thistle, life on the outside-in the Red Zone-is a constant struggle. To protect her family, Mari teams up with the mysterious Thorne Goodman. Together, they’ll face an evil plot in both the underworld of the Red Zone and the society inside the fortresses that could destroy those on the outside…for good.

“I Keep Thinking Today’s Tuesday” – The Sh*t Girls Say Book Release Day!
Wait…it IS Tuesday. More importantly, it’s also the SH*T GIRLS SAY book release date! Creators Kyle Humphrey and Graydon Shepherd started the Youtube and Twitter series as a fun project and it’s become kind of a big thing (over 30 million Youtube view!) The series has been featured on the TODAY show, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today and more.
Countless tributes followed, but there’s really only one original Sh*t Girls Say. Their new book is composed of the funniest observations and sayings that us girls tend to say. Full disclosure: I totally asked myself if I locked the door this morning a block from home. Sigh…
Humphrey and Shepherd premiered the fourth video in the series at the Toronto International Film Festival last week. Check it out below!
Treat yourself with laughter; it’s also a great gift for your friends! PURCHASE TODAY!

The Perfect Summer Cocktail: The Sweet Magnolias Cookbook Margarita
by Sherryl Woods, author of The Sweet Magnolias series (MIRA Books)
Long before there was a margarita night in the Sweet Magnolias series, there were margarita nights at my summer home in Virginia. We can thank my cousin for those.
Just like Helen in the series of Sweet Magnolias novels, Sandy has a way with a blender and some tequila. So at least once or twice a summer, she and several of our friends would gather at my house for a night of laughter, food and those lethal margaritas.
From the beginning — in real life and in the books — margarita nights were about far more than a good drink. They’ve always been about friends getting together to talk about anything and everything, offer support when needed and most of all to laugh. I’ve always believed that laughter is, indeed, the very best medicine. And being surrounded by friends has its own healing power.
Ironically of the five regulars who get together for most of these occasions, one doesn’t drink at all. I rarely have more than one, even though I have to stumble no further than my bedroom at the end of the night. Two of the others are pretty much lightweights when it comes to drinking as well. As I said, it really isn’t about the margaritas.
For all of you who’ve wondered about a good margarita recipe, we have one for you in The Sweet Magnolias Cookbook (Harlequin, September)) along with variations for strawberry margaritas and mango margaritas. In the meantime, here’s the basic recipe to get you started at your next gathering of friends:
1 6-ounce can frozen limeade
3/4 cup tequila
1/4 cup triple sec
2 tablespoons agave nectar or honey
Fill the container of a blender with four cups of ice. Add all ingredients. Secure the lid on the blender, and blend until smooth. Pour into four salt-rimmed margarita glasses or simply pass straws to your best friends and let everyone gather around.
Enjoy! And lift a glass to the Sweet Magnolias next time you get together with your friends.
