Susan Mallery Loves Crabby Women
I love crabby women. In life, in fiction. They make me laugh. I’m talking about the kind of woman who’s crabby with a heart of gold, not the kind of woman who’s just plain mean.
All Summer Long is available from Harlequin.com in print and ebook format starting August 2012!
Meet the MIRA Team
Today marks a first for us at Harlequin MIRA—it’s the start of MIRA Mondays on the Harlequin Blog! One Monday a month, we’ll be posting about all things MIRA-related: from our fabulous authors and incredible books, to behind-the-scenes peeks at what we’re up to around the office and around the world.
As you’ve probably noticed, Harlequin is about more than romance these days. At MIRA, Harlequin’s largest single title imprint, we’re so proud to publish a broad range of outstanding mainstream fiction. From historical fiction to suspense, romance, paranormal, commercial literary fiction and erotica, it’s the variety of our editorial that differentiates us from the other single title imprints. No matter what genre or format, all of our titles have a common thread, and that’s editorial excellence.
The MIRA team is so excited to be teaming up with the Digital group for MIRA Mondays, especially since it gives us a direct line to you—the readers! So without further ado, we’d love to introduce ourselves…
Margaret Marbury is the Vice President of Harlequin Single Titles, which includes Harlequin MIRA, Harlequin HQN and Harlequin LUNA. With 20 years in the business, she is still energized by the prospect of discovering and developing great authors. She has shepherded the careers of many exceptional New York Times bestselling authors, and maintains that innovation is a key component to keeping a career fresh. When she’s not enmeshed in a book – lots of erotica at the moment – she likes to run, bike and swim. She lives in Maplewood, NJ with her husband, Sascha, and has three teenage kids, the oldest of whom is headed off to college this fall.
Valerie Gray is the Executive Editor for Harlequin MIRA, located in Toronto, Canada. Her long and varied career has included work not only in publishing, but in the areas of education, broadcasting and film, all of which have involved telling stories of one sort or another. Since coming to publishing over a dozen years ago, she has assisted the careers of several New York Times bestselling authors and has worked with many others who write in a variety of genres, including commercial literary fiction, historical fiction, romance suspense and paranormal fiction. Her mantra is: “The reason I come to work every day is to discover a new voice, and to be re-inspired by an established author.”
Paula Eykelhof is an Executive Editor, working with both single titles (MIRA) and series books. She has run several different lines, including Superromance, American Romance and Everlasting. She’s been with the company for more than 25 years—lots of experience!—and has edited a number of New York Times bestselling books.
Erika Imranyi is a senior editor at Harlequin MIRA, where she is actively building a list of breakout debut and upmarket commercial women’s fiction. Prior to working for Harlequin, she spent almost a decade at Dutton, an imprint of the Penguin Group, acquiring and editing a wide range of commercial fiction and nonfiction. Erika is most interested in discovering and championing fresh new voices and original stories with mainstream appeal.
A confessed dilettante, Susan Swinwood likes all kinds of books, from heartwarming, feel-good stories to darker, issue-driven novels filled with flawed characters, to richly detailed historical dramas. As Senior Editor for Harlequin MIRA, Susan’s list currently spans romance, literary and commercial fiction, working with romance veterans the likes of Kat Martin and Kayla Perrin, and she’s brought talented new voices such as Rebecca Coleman, Shona Patel, Elizabeth Flock and Pam Jenoff into the fold. In between manuscripts, she likes to relax with her husband at their farmhouse northwest of Toronto, and sometimes even reads for fun.
Miranda Indrigo has been a member of the MIRA editorial team for over a decade, working with New York Times bestselling authors and others in a wide range of genres, including historical fiction, commercial literary fiction, suspense and romance. What makes her drop everything to read? A unique voice, confident writing and characters who are nuanced, vivid and have an extraordinary story to tell.
In her thirty-plus years as an editor (she started at 7 *g*), Leslie Wainger has edited hundreds of books by dozens of authors, among them many bestsellers and award winners. Despite that, she’s still excited to start every new book and acquire every new author, because she thinks getting to read a good book ahead of everyone else in the world is the definition of exciting. Other things that fill her time? Training her dog in agility and doing pet-therapy work with at-risk children, volunteering at the Bronx Zoo, and traveling to exotic destinations like what so far counts as the trip of a lifetime: Madagascar.
Giselle Regus is the Single Title Editorial and Administrative Coordinator, assistant to Margaret Marbury, VP of Single Title Editorial. After working in finance for several years, she decided to pursue her passion for publishing by getting her MA in Publishing at Oxford Brookes University, in Oxford, England. While working primarily for the MIRA imprint, Giselle enjoys working with and getting to know all of the single-title imprints that Harlequin has to offer. She enjoys epic stories of love and adventure, that are profound and full of excitement.
Michelle Venditti is the Editorial Assistant for Harlequin MIRA. After completing her undergrad, Michelle knew exactly two things about her future: it absolutely had to involve books, and it most definitely could not be teaching the same ones over and over. That’s when she knew that a job in book publishing was the one for her. Michelle joined the Harlequin team back in 2010 as a proofreader, where she spent her days happily making romance grammatically correct. In 2011 she joined the MIRA team and now enjoys the thrill of discovering new voices in Women’s Fiction and helping authors produce the best book possible for their readers.
An avid booklover since the age of four, Laura McCallen completed her MA in Early Modern History at the University of Manchester and then jumped right into the world of publishing. After spending the past two and a half years in Educational publishing Laura is enjoying the change of pace as the newest member of the Harlequin MIRA family. In her free time Laura enjoys travelling (Prague is up next!), reading, running, yoga and acting as the Books and Access Manager for The Toronto Review of Books.
Leonore Waldrip is the Editorial Assistant for HQN/Luna and has had the pleasure of working closely with the Mira team as well. Originally from Orlando, FL (where she once appeared on a Nickelodeon game show), she is a graduate of Barnard College and has been with the company for two years. Prior to her time at Harlequin, she worked at Dystel & Goderich Literary Management.

Two Essential Ways to Build Your Characters
by Katie McGarry, author of Pushing the Limits (Harlequin TEEN)
Nothing in writing causes me more joy or pain than creating my characters. Sometimes I have characters who sit themselves next to me and tell me their life story. Sometimes I have characters who love to play hard to get. But without fail, by the time I’m done writing a book, I know way more about all my characters than what makes it into the actual story.
How do I create my characters? Well, I do several things.
1. I ask them questions.
Echo, the heroine in Pushing the Limits, was awesome at answering questions. I asked her: “Do you have any siblings?” She answered: “Yes, but he died.”
Does it get much better than that? Of course, at that point, I had to know what happened and she was more than happy to tell me.
Another question I asked is if she was a virgin. I saw her blush bright red as she answered yes. That told me that in order to create instant conflict, she needed a hero who wasn’t embarrassed about sex.
So what do you do when you have a character who refuses to answer questions?
2. I let them play.
Noah, the hero in Pushing the Limits, refused to answer any of my questions. He crossed his arms over his chest and snapped his mouth tight.
So I free wrote Noah. I gave him room on the page with absolutely no expectations from me. Imagine my surprise when the only thing that would keep him in his guidance counselor’s office was the offer of seeing his brothers. I had no idea he had brothers until he sat back down in the chair.
The best advice I can give is to always be willing to listen to your characters. You’ll never be sorry you did.
Editor’s Note: Katie is on a blog tour promoting her debut Harlequin TEEN novel PUSHING THE LIMITS! She’s stopped by to talk about her characters. If you would like to WIN a copy of PUSHING THE LIMITS, leave a comment here in answer to this question: Have you ever met a character on a page that resembles you in some way?
