But what saved her life wasn't necessarily the surgery to remove the tumor, but a roller coaster.Bassett had gone to an amusement park called Thorpe Park, and doctors say that at the time she boarded a ride called Nemesis, she was "hours away from death."
McDonalds: We Won't Be Using Factory Farms
McDonald's announced that it will no longer be buying pork from factory farmers. Shocking, right? But wait, let's hear the rest before we give them too much credit. The fast food chain said that by 2022 (a full ten years off, whoaaaa), it will only buy pork products from farmers and other sources that do not use gestation stalls for housing the pregnant pigs. Until then, however, it says it will be tracking where its pork comes from and working with producers and suppliers to insure they aren't buying from farms that use such structures.
Art That Changes Weather
Public art is often controversial, but it rarely has the kind of impact that Inigo Manglano-Ovalle's "Weather Field." The best you can usually hope for is a sculpture that will let you look up Marilyn Monroe's skirt, or will double as a slide. However, "Weather Field" promises to offer not only visual appeal and opportunities to argue about the natre of art, it will actually control the weather.
Lindsey Lohan Crashes Again
After slamming into a semi-truck earlier in June, Lindsay Lohan claimed that the driver of the truck cut her off. When he denied that and witnesses backed his claim, she changed her tune to say that not only did the truck cut her off, but that the brakes on her rented Porsche failed.
Spiders Take Over Indian Town of Sadiya
It's like that movie Arachnophobia come true: the Indian town of Sadiya, located in the northeastern state of Assam, has been swarmed by deadly, poisonous spiders that no one seems to know the origin of.The initial attack took place on May 8th, during a cultural celebration, and as the spiders crawled onto the scene, attendees trampled one another trying to escape their (figurative) web.
Tired Drivers Not Much Safer Than Drunken Ones
A study out of France is showing that drivers who were sleepy or drunk were at least twice as likely to cause a crash as those who were sober and had enough rest. Led by Nicholas Moore, researchers at the Centre Hospitalo-Universitaire de Bordeaux analyzed the information of 679 drivers who'd been admitted to the hospital for a stay of greater than 24 hours due to a car accident between 2007 and 2009.
Live Fish Removed from 12-Year-Old's Lungs
Anil Barela was playing a game with his friends in a Khargone, India river, a common game where the object is to catch live fish and swallow them whole. It's certainly a bit weirder than hide-and-seek, but you know, different neighborhoods, right? But the game went horribly awry when, instead of swallowing the fish, Barela accidentally inhaled the nine-centimeter-long fish into his lungs.
Father's Day 2012 Gift Ideas
It's that time of year again—the time where we scramble to think of what a good gift for our dads might be. Another tie? Nah, too boring. A season of a TV show he loves on DVD? No, too impersonal. A gift card to Home Depot or Loews? Well, maybe. But sometimes those can be the dad-equivalent of getting your mom a vacuum for her birthday, so it might be best to dig a little deeper this year for your gift.
Brazilian Toddler Wakes Up at His Funeral
Back in the old days, when someone died, you'd have a "wake" for them. While we still do this today, the reasoning isn't the same. These days, we do it to remember our lost loved one, to look at old pictures together and commiserate. Back then, though, wakes were held to make sure the person was really dead, which is the subject of this story. Earlier this month in Brazil, a two-year-old boy woke up at his own funeral, asked for some water, then laid back down, only this time, he was actually dead.
Public Transit Use On The Rise
Due to a confluence of factors including high gas prices and a generation coming of age with a decided disinterest in cars, use of public transportation has skyrocketed this year. Transit agencies reported record use for the first three months of the year.
Twitter Redesigns Logo, But Why?
Twitter announced last week that its logo had been redesigned, to which we all said, "...Huh?" Frankly, it's hard to tell which logo is old and which is new, but thankfully, they pointed it out for us.The bird's head feathers are gone now, and the new logo has pointier wings and is "slanted upward."

PETA Launches Bizarre Hardcore Porn Site
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the world's most notorious animal rights organization, has pushed the envelope just a little further with its recent launching of a hardcore porn site, proving once again that objectifying women is a-okay, but eating meat is the absolute worst thing one person can do. The site lures in viewers with the promise of big name stars like Jenna Jameson, but once you're on the site, they add in animal rights messages, too, like the importance of spaying and neutering your pets.
Your Birthday Could Also Be Your Deathday
New research has shown that of all the days in the year, you're more likely to kick the bucket on your special day than any other day of the year. That's right—you're more likely to die on your birthday than any of the other 364 (or 365 if you're a leap baby!) days. Kind of a bummer, huh? So why the likelihood of a birthday party gone horribly awry?
The Mouse Takes on Redbox
Surely you’ve heard the cries from the entertainment industry about the bad box office returns and the declining DVD sales, and how they portend a future without huge summer blockbusters. And of course you’ve been told that bad, evil, terrible downloading is the cause of it all. But piracy isn’t the only arrow the industry has in its quiver of scapegoats and bad excuses, and one of them is named Redbox.
Montana Man Sparks Interest in Unique Chess Pieces
One way to make chess cooler is to replace the traditional pieces with something else, and one Montana man has done just that. Kenneth Marx decided that spark plugs look cooler than knights and kings, and set to work. Marx began making chess sets out of old spark plugs 40 years ago, but he stopped because he got busy with other aspects of life.
A Better Umbrella
There are two problems with umbrellas. One is that when you fold them up to put them away, all the water still on the umbrella gets everywhere. The second is that in high winds the umbrellas turn inside out, often tearing the fabric away from the ribs. Both of those issues are solved with the ingenious new Outside-in Umbrella, designed by Yanko Design.
BMW Develops Transmission That Won't Allow Missed Shifts
One way to increase fuel economy is to increase the number of gears a transmission has, since the increased amount of forward speeds helps improve overall efficiency. But while seven- and eight-speed automatic transmissions aren't starting to trickle into the marketplace, most manual transmissions stop at six speeds. BMW is working on changing that.
Buy Clothes Made Of Wine, Never Be Thirsty Again
If there's any piece of clothing that screams "barely functioning alcoholic," it's a dress made out of wine. Now, for the wino in all of us, scientists have created just that, along with t-shirts, swimwear, and more, all by adding a bacteria to wine, which produces a cotton-like substance.
