Artist's Acrylic Paintings Look Like Photographs
Painting and photography are two decidedly different forms of art, usually. But in the case of Canadian artist Jason de Graaf, the two media cross over enough that you may think to yourself, "Which is it?" His ultra-realistic paintings are modeled from photographs, and are visually stunning.
BMW Working On Transmission That Won't Allow Missed Shifts
One way to increase fuel economy is to increase the number of gears a transmission has, since the increased amount of forward speeds helps improve overall efficiency. But while seven- and eight-speed automatic transmissions aren't starting to trickle into the marketplace, most manual transmissions stop at six speeds. BMW is working on changing that.
Gout Is Back
All of the oldies are back. Bands reunite, old fashions return, and even an affliction associated with previous centuries can make a comeback. Inflammatory arthritis, commonly known as gout, is on the rise in many Western countries, thanks to a combination of worsening diets and alcohol consumption.
iPoo App Lets Poopers Connect...Ewww.
The advent of smartphones has led to many people becoming gratuitous over-sharers, but we think this latest app takes things too far. iPoo is an app available for both iOS and Android phones and it's sort of like the FourSquare for pooping—write messages, draw graffiti, earn points and badges, and see what other people are posting, all from the comfort of the porcelain god.
Taco Bell Launches Upscale Menu Items
This July, Taco Bell restaurants will be rolling out a new, "upscale" menu created by celebrity chef Lorena Garcia. The new menu will include things like black beans, cilantro rice, citrus-and-herb-marinated chicken. Sound a little familiar? Sound a little bit like....Chipotle? We think so.
Road Tunes
School’s out, or soon to be, which means lots of new releases coming down the pike. And if you’ve ever wondered, as we have, exactly what a “pike” is, it’s an old-timey word for road, and is the root of the word “turnpike.” Now you know. But enough about words, this week’s new releases feature music from bands old and new, and a controversial photo from funnyman Jimmy Fallon.
Citizen Tweeters @Sweden
Sweden really believes in giving its citizens a voice. So much so that it is letting ordinary Swedes control its official @Sweden Twitter account. Each week, another Swede gets to tweet for the next seven days and be the official representative of the nation in the Twitterverse.
Siri Will Soon Be Riding Shotgun
Although voice recognition has been available in more than a few models for a while now, Apple is planning to bring Siri to cars built by select manufacturers, according to an announcement at the World Wide Developers Conference. Apple is also promising turn-by-turn navigation and crowd-sourced traffic information.
New Jersey Cracks Down on Loose Dogs
New Jersey announced this week that it would begin to ticket drivers who have unrestrained dogs riding in their vehicles. While it's fair that police say a dog on a driver's lap can be (and usually is) very distracting, it seems silly to us that owners may be ticketed now for letting their dogs put their heads out the back windows.
Texas Toll Road May Have 85 MPH Speed Limit
Texas and Utah already have roads with 80 mile per hour speed limits, but now the Lone Star State might claim the title for nation's highest speed limit on a new toll road being built between San Antonio and Austin. Highway 130 is currently being tested to see if it can handle the speed. Only roads built to the highest standards are eligible for speed limits that high.
Fourteen-Year-Old Claims Obama is Making People Gay
A 14-year-old radio host accused President Obama and Vice President Biden of "making kids gay" on his show last week, causing quite a bit of controversy. It sucks that this kid's parents made it their lifetime goal to instill this type of ignorance, bigotry, and hate in their child. And at 14, this may not seem like a big deal to him, but he'll soon find out that no matter where he goes now, people will Google his name and find that pathetic gem attached to it.
Teen Sentenced to Prison for Texting-While-Driving Death
A Massachusetts teenager was sentenced this week to two years in prison and loss of his license for 15 years after being convicted of motor vehicle homicide. Aaron Deveau, 18, is the first driver in the state to face such charges. On February 20, 2011, Deveau was driving and his vehicle swerved across the center line, crashing head on into Daniel Bowley's truck, causing life-ending injuries.
Pooping Dog Lamp Offers Unique Design
For most dog owners, the morning, afternoon, and evening walks are times where picking up dog poop is a totally normal, not-at-all-disgusting act.We don't overthink the motions of bending down and getting the fresh-from-the-factory product off the grass and into the bag—we just do it and get it over with. But now, for people who actually do want to savor those moments, there's the Pooping Dog Lamp, created by UK artist Whatshisname.
Facebook Considers Letting Kids Under 13 Join.
Facebook's current terms of service dictate that you must be over the age of 13 to join, but now, they're revisiting the rule and mulling over whether to allow even younger kids to join. This is all well and terrible, but it ignores a major fact: parents already let their kids sign up when they're under 13. It also ignores that you don't have to prove your birthday, so there are plenty of underage kids on there already.
Gas Can Mom Defends Herself
If you haven't yet seen the story about the Colorado mom who was pulled over by police for seatbelt violations in Aurora, Colorado, it's a doozy. Seems the young lady was pulled over and her toddler son was found unbuckled in one rear seat while a gas can was buckled into the car seat. The Colorado Department of Transportation went online and posted a picture this on Facebook.

FBI Claims Copying Data is Not Stealing
The governmentâs case against file-hosting giant Megaupload just keeps getting weirder. Earlier this week Megaupload petitioned a federal court to dismiss the governmentâs case, and now they are claiming that the FBI illegally copied data from Kim Dotcomâs computer in New Zealand. And the FBIâs response is puzzlingly ironic: Since the files the FBI copied are digital, not physical, it canât be considered theft.

Diet Goggles Help Curb Overeating
If you've ever tried to diet, you've probably heard the advice to eat off smaller plates so that it feels like you're eating more food. Now, there's another option—diet goggles. Researchers at the University of Tokyo have invented a pair of goggles that help people lose weight (theoretically) by making their food look bigger than it actually is, thus tricking the eater into thinking he or she is eating more.
